The Catcher in the Rye Characters
The Catcher in the Rye remains a singular creation, a novel that is wholly tied to the intelligent, immature, and tortured point-of-view of its main character, Holden Caulfield. In some ways Holden is the only character in The Catcher in the Rye, as everyone else in the story is filtered through Holdenââ¬â¢s perception, which is unreliable and often self-indulgent. The end result of this technique is that every other character and their actions must be judged in terms of Holdenââ¬â¢s evolution or lack thereofââ¬âare the people he meets really phonies or does he only see them that way? The fact that Holdenââ¬â¢s Voice still rings true today, while his unreliable nature makes understanding the other characters a challenge, is a testament to Salingerââ¬â¢s skill. Holden Caulfield Holden Caulfield is the sixteen-year-old narrator of the novel. Intelligent and emotional, Holden feels lonely and alienated from the world around him. He considers most of the people and places he encounters phonyââ¬âhypocritical, inauthentic, and pretentious. Holden strives to present himself as a cynical and worldly person who sees through everyone elses tricks, but at times his own youthful naà ¯vetà © shines through. Holdens cynicism can be viewed as a defense mechanism, employed to avoid facing the pain of adulthood and its accompanying loss of innocence. Indeed, Holden adores his younger sister Phoebe and cherishes her innocence, which he equates to inherent goodness. His fantasy of playing the role of catcher in the rye serves to highlight this point: since Holden cannot restore his own innocence, he yearns to protect the innocence of others. Holden is an unreliable first-person narrator. All of Holdens experiences and interactions are presented from his own perspective, so the reader never gets objective information about the novels events. However, there are hints Holden is describing something of a fantasy version of himself, as when the women at the Lavender Room laugh after Holden convinces their friend to dance with him. Holden is obsessed with death, particularly the death of his younger brother, Allie. Over the course of the novel, his health seems to disintegrate. He experiences headaches and nausea and at one point loses consciousness. These symptoms may be real, but they could also be psychosomatic, representing Holdens increasing inner turmoil as he repeatedly tries and fails to find human connection. Ackley Ackley is a classmate of Holdens at Pencey Prep. He has bad hygiene and isnt very popular. Holden claims to despise Ackley, but the two boys go to the movies together, and Holden seeks out Ackley after his altercation with Stradlater. There are hints that Holden views Ackley as a version of himself. Ackley brags about made-up sexual experiences in much the same way that Holden feigns worldliness and life experience. In fact, Holden treats Ackley rather similarly to how other people treat Holden at different points in the story. Stradlater Stradlater is Holdenââ¬â¢s roommate at Pencey Prep. Confident, handsome, and popular, Stradlater is, in some ways, everything Holden wishes he could be. He describes Stradlaterââ¬â¢s inappropriate seduction techniques with breathless admiration, while at the same time clearly understanding how terrible Stradlaters behavior is. Holden is too sensitive to be like Stradlaterââ¬ânotice how he describes the girl he likes in terms of her interests and feelings, not her physicalityââ¬âbut there is a part of him that wishes he was. Phoebe Caulfield Phoebe is Holdenââ¬â¢s ten-year-old sister. She is one of the few people Holden does not consider phony. Smart and loving, Phoebe is one of Holdens only sources of happiness. She is also unusually perceptive for her ageââ¬âshe instantly perceives Holdenââ¬â¢s pain and offers to run away with him in order to help him. For Holden, Phoebe embodies the lost childhood innocence that he is mourning. Allie Caulfield Allie is Holdens late brother, who died of leukemia prior to the start of the novels events. Holden views Allie as a perfect innocent who died before he could be corrupted by knowledge and maturity. In some ways, the memory of Allie is a stand-in for Holdens younger self, the boy he used to be before the loss of innocence. Sally Hayes Sally Hayes is a teenage girl who goes on dates with Holden. Holden thinks Sally is stupid and conventional, but her actions dont support this assessment. Sally is well-read and well-mannered, and her self-centeredness seems more like developmentally-appropriate teenage behavior than a lifetime personality flaw. When Holden invites Sally to run away with him, Sallys rejection of the fantasy is rooted in a clear-headed analysis of their prospects. In other words, Sallyââ¬â¢s sole crime is not conforming to Holdenââ¬â¢s fantasy about her. In turn, Holden covers his hurt at being rejected by deciding Sally is not worth his time (a very adolescent reaction). Carl Luce Carl Luce is Holdens former student advisor from the Whooton School. He is three years older than Holden. At Whooton, Carl was a source of information about sex for the younger boys. When Holden is in New York City, he meets up with Carl, who is now nineteen and a student at Columbia. Holden tries to get Carl to talk about sex, but Carl refuses and eventually becomes so frustrated with the incessant questioning that he leaves. Holden also asks about Carls sexual orientation, a moment that suggests Holden may be questioning his own sexuality. Mr. Antolini Mr. Antolini is Holdens former English teacher. Mr. Antolini is sincerely invested in helping Holden, offering him emotional support, advice, and even a place to stay. During their conversation, he treats Holden with respect and acknowledges Holdens struggles and sensitivity. Holden likes Mr. Antolini, but when he wakes up to find Mr. Antolinis hand on his forehead, he interprets the action as a sexual advance and leaves abruptly. It is unclear whether Holdens interpretation is accurate, however, as the gesture could simply signify care and concern. Sunny Sunny is a prostitute that Maurice, the elevator operator-sum-pimp at the hotel sends to Holden. She appears to Holden to be quite young and immature, and he loses interest in having sex with her after observing some of her nervous habits. Holden comes to see her as being worse off than he isââ¬âa lone moment of sympathy for the character. She becomes, in other words, a human being to him instead of a sex object, and he canââ¬â¢t bring himself to do anything. At the same time, his loss of sexual desire could be seen as a lack of interest in the female gender.

Autism and Physical Therapy Help Free Essays
Autism Spectrum Disorders Autism spectrum disorders are very complex neurological disorders that have baffled experts over the years. These have brought numerous questions on the actual causes but there have not been many answers. Pervasive developmental disorders are how Autism spectrums are classified and it includes Autism, Asperger syndrome, Rett syndrome, and Childhood Disintegrative Disorder. We will write a custom essay sample on Autism and Physical Therapy Help or any similar topic only for you Order Now Each of these disorders has similarities in the individualââ¬â¢s lack of communication, socialization, and behavior. Autism was first introduced by Leo Kanner in the forties. His research is close in comparison to research conducted today. There will be signs of autism before the age of three and there are some significant deficits that help diagnose these young children. Social interaction, communication, and behavior are three deficits that are very noticeable in children with autism. You could be trying to talk to your own brother and he would be preoccupied doing something else. He wouldnââ¬â¢t show any signs of comprehending what you are saying and wouldnââ¬â¢t even look you in the eyes while you spoke. Autism can devastate a family, there is no cure and no medicine. You could have a normal developing baby until they just seemingly start to change and show abnormal behaviors before they turn three. They can look normal on the outside but there is some unknown phenomenon that happens to their brain. Genetic and environmental causes have been tested but there is still no definite answer. Aspergerââ¬â¢s disorder is named after Hans Asperger in 1944 when he saw significant patterns of behavior in mostly his male patients. Aspergerââ¬â¢s disorder is similar to autism in their impairments in social interaction and behavior. But they do not have a delay in language, cognitive development, and adaptive behavior. This disorder becomes clearer in elementary school when obvious social and behavioral problems become apparent. One rare condition that can appear in individuals is called savantism. These individuals show profound abilities that exceed what would be ordinary in most people. Another syndrome is called Rett and it is a very rare disorder of the nervous system that lead to developmental reversals especially in areas of language and hand use. Kids with this syndrome have normal development for the first five months, but have significant decelerated head growth between five and forty-eight months. It is onset prior to age four but is common to start earlier in life. Rett syndrome appears in nearly only females and can be misdiagnosed with other disorders like cerebral palsy. Some symptoms are floppy arms or legs, seizures, loss of normal sleep patterns, intellectual, and learning difficulties. The last of the Autism spectrum disorders is Childhood Disintegrative Disorder. The children with this disorder have normal development for the first couple years. They are diagnosed if they have a loss of skills in language, behavior, bowel control, and motor skills. Some other criteriaââ¬â¢s are abnormal functioning in social interaction, communication and stereotype behaviors. There is no cure for these disorders but there is some therapy that can help. Behavioral therapy helps with social skills, self care, and can increase independent functioning. Occupational, speech, and physical therapy help the individual as well. Medications like stimulants and antidepressants are also helpful but their so exact medication for autism. But the main way to treat patients is to individualize the treatment. Having impairments in verbal and nonverbal communication would be devastating for any family. To have your child developing normally with the ability to communicate and act normal, then out of know where starts to lose those abilities. I couldnââ¬â¢t imagine how frustrating and sad it would be for the family to have to cope that. Itââ¬â¢s crazy to think with all the technology in the world that someone or some organization could find better treatment or even a cure. Hopefully one day there will be a cure and families around the world would be able to have normal lives with their loved ones. How to cite Autism and Physical Therapy Help, Papers

Thank God It Was Ratified! Essays - United States, James Madison
"Thank God it was ratified!" With the Constitution the elite society protected rights for every American that would secure and ensure our nation's existence for hundreds of years. Under the Articles of Confederation, the United States' government was in a state of chaos. To end the existing chaos and build a stronger democratic society for the future, the government would need to be more powerful and centralized. Thus, the elite class established the rules and boundaries that would protect the rights of all citizens from a suppressive government. The Articles created a weak, almost nonexistent national government that was in complete control by the states. The newly formed government had neither an executive or judicial branch, which meant that it lacked enforcement powers. There were three problems that existed under the Articles of Confederation that would spawn an act of change. First, under the Articles of Confederation the government could not protect property and other rights of the citizens. Second, the society created under the Articles of Confederation lacked a means of advancing commerce and interstate trade. Third, government lacked the money and power to provide an adequate national defense. Traders and commercial men found their plans for commerce on a national scale impeded by local interference with interstate commerce. The currency of the states and the nation were hopelessly muddled. Creditors everywhere were angry about the depreciated paper money which the agrarians had made and were attempting to force upon those from whom they had borrowed specie. Poor, small landowning farmers could not sell or trade goods that they produced on their land to other states. The "muddled currency" in 1786, led to the loss of land in Massachusetts. During this time Continental army veterans were unable to pay their debts with the paper money that they were supplied with by the Continental Congress. This bankruptcy led to the loss of land and a great rebellion led by Daniel Shays. The Shay's rebellion was ended easily enough but it was the lack of national government that frightened people. Had Daniel Shays gathered a larger number of people and had more fire power the small amount of farmers and townspeople might not have been able to squash this rebellion. Anarchy in the States could not be tolerated. However it was James Madison that stated that the way to abolish the rule by faction is to abolish liberty but that liberty is essential to a faction as air is to fire. Madison continues to state that, "The inference to which we are brought is, that the causes of faction cannot be removed; and that relief is only to be sought in the means of controlling its effects." Madison understood that to take away liberty was to stop a faction and therefore if a hindrance or boundary on liberty was established it would control the rule by faction. Madison was opposed to complete abolishment of liberty and therefore the most reasonable decision was to place boundaries on it. Madison and the elite class noticed how the Articles of Confederation disrupted the majority of the American people and created a system of government where liberty was so free that it hindered society. The decision to create a new system of government was in the best interest of all the people in America. In creating the Constitution there were many conflicting views of how the newly created government should function. Alexander Hamilton, wanted a strong central government in which a Senate and executive power were chosen for life by indirect election; therefore creating an aristocracy. George Mason, an antifederalist, objected to the final document because of the possibility that this new government would create an aristocracy. Mason also proposed that, "there is no declaration of Rights" and the "Legislature [cannot prohibit] the further Importation of Slaves," which he felt was destructive of the country's moral fiber. On the Bill of Rights issue, the government did not need regulations that stated what it cannot do because a government cannot act unless it is stated within the law. If there was not a law that stated that they could censor the press then it is illegal for them to do so. Mason and many other antifederalists were opposed to the Constitution because it allowed the importation of slaves for at least another twenty years. Without this clause in the Constitution it never would have been ratified because the South would not have voted for ratification denying the Constitution the three fourths vote that it needed. Although the importation of slaves in the Constitution was not ideal there was not a way to ratify the Constitution without the South's vote on this issue. Charles A. Beard criticizes the creators of the Constitution

When Should I Capitalize Internet
When Should I Capitalize Internet When Should I Capitalize Internet? The question of whether to capitalize ââ¬Å"internetâ⬠is source of much controversy. It has even inspired its own Wikipedia article. But weââ¬â¢re here to make writing easy, so weââ¬â¢re going to ignore the controversies and set out the basics of when to capitalize ââ¬Å"internetâ⬠in simple terms. Internet as a Proper Noun Unless it appears at the start of a sentence, you should only capitalize ââ¬Å"Internetâ⬠when it is a noun. More specifically, you can capitalize it when referring to the Internet (i.e., the world wide web). Everything is connected now In this case, ââ¬Å"Internetâ⬠is a proper noun, a word that names a unique thing. So ââ¬Å"the Internetâ⬠is like the name of a person (e.g., Delia) or city (e.g., Boston). Using a capital ââ¬Å"Iâ⬠was common in the early days of the web, especially in technical writing. However, as the internet has become part of our lives, most people now write it with a lower-case ââ¬Å"Iâ⬠instead. Dialect can make a difference, too, as capitalizing ââ¬Å"Internetâ⬠is more common in American English than other dialects. Ultimately, though, it is a matter preference. For instance, both of these sentences are fine: I looked up advice on the Internet. The internet is full of contradictory advice. The most important thing is consistency. So if you write ââ¬Å"Internetâ⬠in one part of a document, you would want to use the same capitalization throughout. You may also want to check your school/college/employerââ¬â¢s style guide. However, there are a couple of situations where you should never capitalize this term. We will look at each of the following below: Using ââ¬Å"internetâ⬠to refer to interconnected networks in general. Using ââ¬Å"internetâ⬠as an adjective. Internet as a Common Noun The word ââ¬Å"internetâ⬠is a contraction of ââ¬Å"interconnected network.â⬠We can therefore use it to describe any set of interconnecting networks. And when referring to interconnected networks in general, we do not capitalize ââ¬Å"internetâ⬠because it is a common noun rather than a proper noun. In other words, while the Internet is an internet, it is not the only internet! You are unlikely to need the generic term ââ¬Å"internetâ⬠in your daily life. But if you are involved with computers in your work or studies, remember not to capitalize ââ¬Å"internetâ⬠unless youââ¬â¢re referring to the Internet. Adjectival Internets We can also use ââ¬Å"internetâ⬠as an adjective. For example: My internet connection has dropped out again. Here, the word ââ¬Å"internetâ⬠modifies the noun ââ¬Å"connection.â⬠This means weââ¬â¢ve used it as an adjective. And as such, we do not need to capitalize it. Summary: When Should I Capitalize Internet? You can capitalize the ââ¬Å"Iâ⬠in ââ¬Å"internetâ⬠if you are using it as a proper noun, but this is a matter of choice. Here at Proofed, for example, we prefer ââ¬Å"internetâ⬠in all cases. But this is just because we donââ¬â¢t see the need to capitalize it, not because ââ¬Å"Internetâ⬠is wrong. There are no hard and fast rules about capitalizing ââ¬Å"internet,â⬠then. However, if you want to capitalize it, keep the following in mind: You can capitalize ââ¬Å"Internetâ⬠when it is a proper noun (i.e., when it refers to the world wide web), but this is a matter of choice. Do not capitalize ââ¬Å"internetâ⬠when it is an adjective (e.g., ââ¬Å"internet usersâ⬠). Do not capitalize this term when referring to internetworking in general. If you are writing for your studies or job, you may have a style guide available. Check this for advice on capitalization. Make sure to apply capitalization consistently in your writing. And if youââ¬â¢d like more help with your writing, you can have it proofread.

Israeli Palestinian Conflict Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words
Israeli Palestinian Conflict - Essay Example Looking up at the conflict amid the Israel and Palestine as a nation, major problem occurred by the involvement of the United States. Before 1948, Jews and Palestine both used to live in the similar land, known to be Palestine. After the war of 1948 and 1949, the land, Palestine, was divided into three main parts, therefore, the West Bank, sate of Israel and the Gaza Strip. The division of land was done due to the decision made by the United Nations. In the beginning, the land was supposed to be divided into two parts, Arabs and the Jewish. After the unfortunate war of 1949, forces of Israel achieved control over the lands and a peace agreement was signed which created borders according to the decision of UN. Although, peace have never settled on the lands and there have been a variety of disputes over who control what parts of the land. Since 1967, Israel took control over Jerusalem and used its control to establish settlements and supported its civilians to move or inhabit the coun try. After the outbreak of the war in 1949, solution was never found and on the other hand, the Israel feels that they are the ones who should rule the lands but their status is yet to be determined. In June 1945 accompanied with an indirect rebelliousness of the British White Paper, restricted the Jewish immigration into the state for over 75,000 people and after that the President Truman send a proposal which stated that 100,000 European Jewish should be admitted at very instance. Truman was warned by the British that it would anger the Arabs but however, they accepted the proposal anyway. After few years, in 1948, Truman was advised to distinguish the State of Israel. After few minutes of the announcement, the United States recognized the newly formed Nation. According to Arabs, at that time, they thought that the United States was on the side of the Israel and this perception due to the actions taken by the United States has made it difficult to find a solution for the Israel and Palestine conflict. At first, the United States was very slow to provide military help to the new nation of Israel. After the Second World War, the attention of the United States directed towards the rising world power known to be Soviet Union. The problems and conflict of the Israel at that time were not of too much concern for the U.S. However, when Israel occupied the Sinai Peninsula in 1958 from Egypt, the United States did not take side of the Israel but pressurized them to call back their troops from there. Apart from U.S. pressurization, there were a lot of many other threats that influenced Israel to move back. All through the 1950s and 1960s, level of assistance from United States was very low but in 1967, financial help for Israel went up to $13 million but however, it was soon altered. In the sixth day of war in 1968, the United States provided $76 million which increased for more than $800 by the end of 1971. In 2001, $2.82 billion plus with the military assistance was offered to the Israel. Additionally, $60 million was given for the resettlement of the refugees and $250 million for stabilizing the budget of Department of Defense as well as $85 million for accused interest. "Unquestionably, Israel is the largest cumulative recipient of U.S. aid since World War II. Estimates
